Children riders bring Germany its first gold medal at the European Championships in Riesenbeck

July 12. 2025

Silver for the Netherlands, bronze for Switzerland – after a jump-off

Eleven teams set out for the team final of Europe’s best children. The German U14 team with Maximilan Kögler and Georgy, Johanna Hell and Copacabana, Luisa Charlotte Brocks with Cordijana and Justus Thomsen on Clooney had already moved into pole position early on with strong rounds over the previous days and zero penalty points on their account. However, the teams from Switzerland and Italy were on the prowl with just four points each.

Maximilian Kögler finished the course with an unfortunate four penalty points, but Johanna Hell and her Comme il Faut daughter Copacabana M kept the dream of gold alive with their third clear round in as many days. Over the next few minutes, the ranking on the big leaderboard changed with every ride. Two falls in the Italian and Swedish teams, which thankfully ended without any serious consequences, prevented their chances of a better placing. Even last year's winners from Great Britain were ultimately only able to finish in tenth place.

The rest of the competition remained exciting thanks to the Dutch riders catching up and another clear round by the Swiss rider Noah Philips-De Vuyst on Fouego de la Closiere. However, the German team around national youth coach Eberhard Seemann was definitely guaranteed a podium place, although the third and youngest team rider, 12-year-old Luisa Charlotte Brocks on the 11-year-old Westphalian Cordijana, knocked a rail.

Then a sense of relief: Even before the final rider, Justus Thomsen, it was clear - Germany would be European Champion in the Children's age group. The 13-year-old young show jumper and his 15-year-old grey by Clarimo nevertheless completed the course full concentration and put a fine finish to the German performance with their confident clear round. The German celebrations were joined by their fifth team member, Mathilde Beerbaum. As is customary in the youth division, all athletes from the top three nations received a medal on the podium.

Eberhard Seemann was moved to tears and struggled to find his words at first: "I'm overwhelmed. A medal or even a title is of course always great. Being European champion is even better, of course. And then to do it in your own country, that’s something very special. I'm more than happy!”

The Dutch and the Swiss were tied on points and rode in a jump-off for the remaining podium spots. Chef d'Equipe Edwin Hoogenraat's team won the silver medal after three clear rounds, leaving bronze for the Swiss riders.
