Germany's top U25 pairs in championship mode

July 13. 2023

Free entry on the first day of the Global Champions Tour show

Side by side with international world stars, Germany's best U25 show jumpers will demonstrate their skills at the Riesenbeck International Equestrian Center from July 20-23. They will be making history as they are part of the premiere of the U25 German Show Jumping Championships. In the joint classification for men and women, the young show jumpers will compete for the first time in this age group in three S*** qualifications, all of which will count - just like in a senior championship.

For U25 national coach Peter Teeuwen, this closes the last gap in the promotion of young show jumpers. "I was pleased that the FN Federal Youth Director Heidi van Thiel and I were able to win over not only the Dieter Hoffmann Foundation as a supporter with the concept of this championship, but also Riesenbeck as a location." The goal was to find a venue "that stands for what the U25 riders are striving for," Teeuwen relates. The effect on the riders, as well as externally, will be further enhanced by the Longines Global Champions Tour leg taking place at the same time - the junior national coach of the three age groups U18, U21 and U25 is certain of this.

"It is precisely this championship idea that once again distinguishes the U25 German Championship from other tournament series such as the U25 Jumping Cup. The right management is required here, we took this championship mode with the time jumping at the beginning out of the other junior championships for a reason. The time jumping as the first competition already has a special degree of difficulty, because riders and horses have to solve a difficult course here at forward speed. As in senior championships, this is followed by a fault-time jumping competition and, on the final day, a jumping competition with two rounds. Riders and horses must therefore perform consistently over four rounds. In this way, we offer the pairs the perspective of developing further at a high level," reports Peter Teeuwen. It is therefore hardly surprising that Germany's top U25 pairs have registered for Riesenbeck just a few weeks after the U25 Jumping Cup Final. For example, the three best from Aachen will be there: Teike Carstensen, Sönke Fallenberg and Pia-Luise Baur.

The U25 national coach believes it is only a matter of time before the U25 riders can compete at an international championship. The World Equestrian Federation (FEI) is already discussing this at the moment. Teeuwen: "For future international heavy tasks, the German Championship U25 therefore has a high significance and could be something like the crowning highlight of the season for the participants this year."

One of the riders whose talent was recognized early on and who has already been able to celebrate great successes in World Cup show jumping competitions or even tasks on the Global Champions Tour would theoretically also be eligible to take part in the U25 German Championships: Philipp Schulze Topphoff. With Team Riesenbeck International, he has been able to claim several victories in the Global Champions League in recent months. Does Peter Teeuwen regret not having such a young star on the list of participants for Riesenbeck? "No, actually quite the opposite," says the 58-year-old: "I'm actually pleased, because with Philipp Schulze Topphoff we've managed to get him exactly where we want him to be. We've done our groundwork, so to speak, and have now successfully 'handed him over' to the head coach." Who knows, maybe after the introduction of the U25 German Show Jumping Championship we will see even more young faces in the very big jumping competitions in the future - Peter Teeuwen will be watching his protégés closely in the coming week in any case.

In the sand stadium of the Riesenbeck International facility, the U25 show jumpers will start their national championship on Thursday, July 20 at 6 pm. On this first day of the tournament, entry to the show grounds, which have been nobly designed for the Longines Global Champions Tour - Stage, is free - the first qualifier will take place at 6 pm.  On Friday, starting at 16:30, the second qualification will include a jumping competition over 1.45 meters. And the final, in which the German championship title will be awarded, will be held on Saturday at 5.30 p.m. in a 1.50-meter jumping competition over two rounds.
